Comprehensive Epilepsy Program

Le Bonheur’s epilepsy program is a National Association of Epilepsy Center Level IV Accredited comprehensive program, the highest level and one of only a few in the United States.
Our epilepsy team includes the pioneer of MEG, researchers in epilepsy drug treatment and leaders in neurological associations and societies and they treat with the most complex diagnoses.
Each year, we treat more than 1,300 children with epilepsy and other seizure disorders. Our patients have some of the highest seizure-free rates in the country.

The Evaluation Process
A multi-disciplinary team will evaluate your child when admitted to our-state-of-the-art Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) on the seventh floor the hospital. Testing will record, diagnose and determine an individualized treatment plan for your child.
Ten patient rooms are equipped for epilepsy monitoring with wireless technology that provides constant EEG monitoring, even when a child is out of the bed.
We know that seizures occur when kids are just being kids. We want our EMU patients to be as comfortable and active as normal while being evaluated.

Dietary Therapy - Ketogenic Diet

As one of the oldest epilepsy diet treatments, the ketogenic diet consists of consuming high-fat foods and very few carbohydrates. This diet should be carefully calculated and monitored by a knowledgeable doctor. The diet itself is challenging, especially at the beginning. The ketogenic diet requires:

•Strict compliance
•Precise food measurements
•A hospital stay for observation
•Plenty of patience
